The Fontaine Suite is named after John Fontaine. His journal chronicles the expedition of the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe led by Governor Alexander Spotswood in 1716 through the Swift Run Gap and into the Shenendoah Valley.
He, like all the “Knights” who were on the expedition received a grant of land and a horseshoe of gold, the size of a small child’s palm , studded with diamonds where the nails would go, and printed with this Latin phrase: SIC JURAT TRANSCENDERE MONTES translated as meaning: “Thus he swears to cross the mountains”.
